Ken Middlebrook

Ken is the Executive Director for Proficiency Testing Canada, an accredited PT program specializing in environmental testing PT. He obtained an M. Sc. In Marine Biology in 1985 before realizing that the nearest ocean was 1800 km away. He then fell into the analytical testing field as a bench analyst for a commercial testing laboratory. Over the next ten years he worked as a bench analyst and a laboratory supervisor.

Ken moved to Ottawa in 1992 to accept the position of Laboratory Manager for the City of Ottawa’s wastewater and drinking water laboratories. During his time in this position Ken oversaw the design and construction of a new laboratory for the City, the implementation of analytical automation, and accreditation to Guide 25 (now ISO/IEC 17025).

After ten years in this position he moved on to the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA) as the Proficiency Testing Manager. In this role he was responsible for all aspects of CALA’s accredited PT program. In 2020, due to the revision of ISO/IEC 17011, CALA was forced to divest itself of the PT program and created Proficiency Testing Canada, a separate not-for-profit organization.

Ken is also an assessor for CALA and A2LA, as well as a lead evaluator for APAC (formerly APLAC). In addition to this he is representing Canada on ISO/CASCO WG57 for the revision of ISO/IEC 17043.
